Bayern: Your approach

Sir Alex knows only a win will suffice against an in-form Bayern Munich side tonight. What would you do if you were in his shoes? These Talking Reds users have some ideas...

I favour a 4-4-2 with Berbatov and Rooney or Macheda upfront. Nani, Fletcher, Carrick and Valencia in midfield. I am confident that those four can do the job in the middle. We need to understand the urgency of the situation so an early goal (within the first 20 minutes) is a must.

I think it’s not good to bring Macheda into the first team. He’s too young to play in the starting XI of a Champions League master clash. In the Chelsea match Nani should have started. I think there will be some goals for us. I hope the starting XI is as follows: van der Sar; Rafael, Rio, Vidic, Evra; Valencia, Fletcher, Scholes, Giggs, Nani; Berbatov. And if no goals are scored before 60 minutes we should bring on Macheda for Valencia and Carrick for Scholes. The 4-5-1 formation has become United’s favourite so we need to trust it.

I feel Park is perfect to play behind Macheda but since Macheda has been largely untested [at this level] I think it’s best to play the more experienced Berbatov, who could spring some surprises and create goals. Nani has been improving but in a big match like this it’s best to rely on Giggs. I wouldn't want us to field Rooney because I don't want us to risk aggravating his injury.

I'm hoping John O'Shea is fit. He'll be able to cover Ribery with his experience and I hope we go for the attack with Valencia and Nani both playing and Macheda supporting Berbatov. If we play a bit better than our second half against Chelsea we should be fine. The goal is to take the game to Bayern and use our home advantage.

Replace Giggs and Scholes from the weekend and put in Carrick and Nani, who was effective straight away against Chelsea. Valencia will need to work his socks off as he'll have to help Neville out stopping Ribery and also join up with Park, Nani and Berbatov when we attack.

I think it will be wise to go for energy as opposed to experience, meaning the lads should replace the living legends.
