Champions League Group Stage 3
5 November 1997, De Kuip
(Cole 31, 44, 75)
United: Schmeichel; G Neville, Berg, Pallister, Irwin (P Neville 82); Beckham, Butt, Scholes (Poborsky 76), Giggs; Sheringham, Cole (Solskjaer 76).
Subs not used: Van der Gouw, Curtis, Thornley, McClair.
The striker’s opener came just after the half-hour mark when defender Bernard Schuiteman’s attempted clearance deflected off Cole’s thigh and over Jerzy Dudek in the Feyenoord goal.
Cole bagged his second just before the break when he converted David Beckham’s cross, and he sealed his treble with a tap-in following a great passing move involving Gary Pallister and Ryan Giggs.
Igor Korneev netted a late consolation for the Dutch hosts, but United eased to victory to move to the brink of the quarter-finals.
The end of the game was marred by an ugly stamp on Denis Irwin by Feyenoord’s Paul Bosvelt, which so incensed Sir Alex that he ordered his players not to swap shirts at the final whistle.
