Manchester United taught Stoke City a harsh lesson on their first Premier League visit to Old Trafford with a ruthless five-goal display in November 2008.
Cristiano Ronaldo hit his 100th United goal with a trademark 30-yard free-kick to open the scoring, while Danny Welbeck netted on his league debut for the Reds with a spectacular, rising strike from a similar distance after coming on as a second-half substitute.
In between, Michael Carrick’s left-footed drive found its way through a crowd of Stoke defenders to hit the top corner and Dimitar Berbatov fired low past Thomas Sorensen.
Stoke sporadically threatened with their perhaps overly relied-on tactic of Rory Delap’s long throw-ins, but United comfortably held firm and Ronaldo completed the scoring with another arrowing free-kick one minute from full-time.
