Had it not been for a serious knee injury sustained in April, ex-United striker Giuseppe Rossi could have been facing Wayne Rooney in the Euro 2012 quarter-finals.
The former Red, capped 27 times so far by Italy, now plays his club football with Villarreal in Spain. But five years ago, he still had ambitions to make the grade at Old Trafford - as he revealed in this June 2007 interview with United's official magazine...
How have things been going while you've been on loan with Parma?
So far, it's gone great. It's been everything I expected. I'm just happy to have the chance to play week in, week out. It hasn't always been easy, we've struggled this season and we've been in and around the relegation zone for most of the campaign.
Parma are your old club of course. Did you feel any extra pressure going back there?
No, it was the right choice and it has given me the opportunity to play in Serie A. The fact that I knew the city and the people at the club made it much easier to settle in and meant I had no problems getting used to the lifestyle. All those aspects played a big part in my decision to come here.
What are the main differences between Italian and English games from a striker's point of view?
"You always have to be confident in your own ability and I am. I really hope I can make my mark next season."
