United's Reserves made a winning start to the league season, brushing off the challenge of Bolton Wanderers to win 3-1 at Leyland's County Ground.
Craig Cathcart headed United in front, only for Michael O'Halloran to level soon afterwards. Zoran Tosic then nudged the Reds ahead again, before Sam Hewson made sure of the points late on. There were also run-outs for Wes Brown, Darron Gibson and Danny Welbeck, all of whom completed at least an hour towards their early-season fitness levels.
Those experienced heads bolstered Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Warren Joyce's side. A week ago, an inexperienced United won the Lancashire Senior Cup at the expense of a Bolton side boasting 11 players with first-team experience. Here, the roles were reversed as a young Trotters side took to the field.
United were ahead inside three minutes, as Cathcart rose nodded Tosic's corner inside goalkeeper Robert Lainton's near post. Parity was restored seven minutes later, though, as O'Halloran raced onto a Sam Sheridan through-ball and calmly converted.
