Superb braces from Magnus Eikrem and Joshua King gave an on-song Reserves side a swaggering victory over reigning champions Sunderland.

The two young Norwegians terrorised the Black Cats as United ran riot, and the manner in which the Reds bounced back from last month's disappointing defeat to Liverpool will provide particular pleasure for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Warren Joyce.

Missed chances proved the Reds' undoing at Prenton Park a fortnight ago, but it took Eikrem just nine minutes to break the deadlock.

The tricky teenager, who has been a revelation in central midfield this term, is fast establishing himself as a set-piece specialist, and he curled a superb 25-yard effort over the Sunderland wall and just inside the right-hand post to further enhance his reputation.

King also began the game well, and almost laid on a quickfire second goal for Zoran Tosic with a surging run and cross, only for the Serbian's effort to be deflected over. From the subsequent corner, only a superb reaction save from Ben Wilson prevented Oliver Gill from powerfully heading home a first Reserves goal.
