The Diagram of the Heart frontman discusses his love for United...
Do you get to many games?
Grant, the band’s drummer, is a regular so I come with him when I can. My first ever game was on New Year's Day in 1994 against Leeds at OT. I was so excited, but it ended 0-0. Thankfully I’ve seen a lot of goal-filled games since.
Who are your United heroes?
I was a keeper when I was young so my idol was Peter Schmeichel, but I was also a big fan of Eric [Cantona]. Of the current squad, I really like Nani. He’s an exciting player who creates a lot. I think he’s only going to get better.
If a current player could join your band, who would you choose?
I think Rio fancies himself as a bit of a music man so he could be good. Nani would provide some good entertainment with some back-flips and acrobatics on stage and I know Rooney is into his rock music so I’m sure he’d fit in well.
What’s this we hear about Wayne naming his son after you…
I met him at a gig just before Coleen gave birth to Kai and my friends are convinced it’s because he’d met me! I’m not so sure, but I guess he could have gone home and said to Coleen, ‘I was hanging out with this guy called Kye,’ and she might have liked the name so who knows.
How do you rate United’s chances of silverware this season?
It’s been a funny season all-round so far – some teams started well but haven’t maintained their form. It felt like we were missing something at the start of the season, but we’ve pulled through because of the strength in the squad and I think there’s still so much more to come.
