If you’re trying to teach someone to play piano, and you spend 50 minutes of an hour-long lesson talking him through sheet music, then he’s not going to learn. He needs to play. If you just get on with things and play football, then everybody gets exposed technically to knocking the ball about.

You need to have good basic skills and the way to build that is with plenty of contact with the ball. You need to be able to pass the ball over shorter distances, pass the ball one-touch, receive the ball on the turn, pass over longer distances, practice kicking the ball with both feet and maybe use the outside of both feet where possible. Not many players can do that.

The wider the range of skills you practice, the better you will become. Footballers can’t do without the ability to create something under pressure, so there is an added incentive in modern football to be unpredictable.

You shouldn’t have queues of players waiting to work with the ball. You might have a line of players, taking shots at a keeper one at a time. At any one time then you’ll have one
