Flashback: Chelsea '02

United travelled to Stamford Bridge in April 2002 needing a win to keep the pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal, who were to host struggling Ipswich Town at Highbury the following day.

Action: After a cagey opening, the deadlock was broken in style when Ryan Giggs rolled a free-kick square and Paul Scholes lashed the ball past Carlo Cudicini from 30 yards out. Ruud van Nistelrooy had a golden chance to double the Reds' advantage after 25 minutes but the Dutchman was denied by the Italian stopper one-on-one. However, Ruud hit his 33rd goal of the season soon after, latching onto Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s pass and rounding the goalkeeper to make it 2-0. Good link-up play between van Nistelrooy and Giggs provided the third goal on a plate for Solskjaer late on as United avenged a home defeat by the same 3-0 scoreline earlier in the season.

Reaction: Arsenal’s win over Ipswich kept them clear at the top and they ultimately claimed the league title by beating the Reds at Old Trafford 18 days later.
