Gibson: This is my chance
Darron Gibson knows opportunities like tonight’s against Middlesbrough don’t come along often, so he’s determined to make the most of it if he’s given a chance to shine.
Sir Alex Ferguson has earmarked the 20-year-old Republic of Ireland international as a potential starter against Gareth Southgate’s men.
Gibson wasn’t involved when the Reds suffered a surprising 2-0 defeat to Coventry City last season, but he will be determined to avoid a similar fate this time around.
"The gaffer and the players were really disappointed when we lost to Coventry last season," Gibson tells tonight's issue of United Review. "We want to stay in as many competitions as possible this year."
Gibson has had plenty of experience being around the first-team set-up this season which, alone, he feels has brought his game on another step. All that education will have to be put into practice against Boro tonight.
"I’ve realised that my overall game is improving day-by-day and week-by-week, simply because I’m working with the best players in the world.
“I learn just by watching them – they do things off-the-cuff in training and I think 'wow',” he added. “All the senior players have helped me and if I was to take any one of them aside they’d be more than willing to give me advice."
