First gear enough for Reds

have to rap the Reds for resting Rooney or Liverpool for benching Gerrard and Torres? In this era, you'd be neglecting half your squad if you always fielded the same eleven players.

Returning to Red matters, there were several notable contributions against Wolves, even if we weren't at our best. Obertan dazzled and looks increasingly like the exciting winger we love at United. Gibson excelled again and was involved in all the Reds’ goals. He’s really maturing and if I were in Sir Alex’s shoes I’d have no hesitation in throwing him in for the biggest games. Berbatov had a frustrating night, but his critics cannot deny his class when he pulls out moments of brilliance like he did to feed Valencia for the third. Sir Alex is right, Berba can do the things that make you think 'that's world class.'

At the back, Brown didn’t start and Vidic went off, leaving us light again. But De Laet looked assured at right-back and made a comfortable switch to centre-half. Carrick was also excellent.

All in all it was a successful night, and knowing that United are in touch at the top, without hitting top gear, I think we can expect an exciting New Year.
