The Gossip: July 19-23

Running total: 88 in (estimated £1.630billion), 19 out (estimated £174million, including loans and swaps)

Friday 23 July

21:23 A very slow day on the transfer gossip front, but the major revelation of the day has been David Gill's confirmation that Nemanja Vidic has agreed a new contract extension. It's a massive boost for United, a setback for Real Madrid, if indeed they did want the Serbian defender, and a delightful way to end another week of Gossip.

12:03 Manchester City are reportedly close to tying up a deal for Mario Balotelli, but Internazionale president Massimo Moratti has warned the Blues that there are rival bids - reported to be from United and Chelsea. "At this moment there are contacts with Manchester City, but we must find an agreement that satisfies both us and them," the Daily Mail quotes Moratti as saying. "We are evaluating other offers. We are looking at offers, but there is no final decision on my part. Everyone is playing their part."

10:55 "Real Madrid are the only club in the world I've been considering so far. However, nothing has been decided yet. I will make a decision about my future in the coming days." The words of Germany midfielder Sami Khedira, speaking to Bild. Sounds like a shoo-in to become Jose Mourinho's next signing, ending the alleged hopes of United and other Premier League clubs.

10:43 After United's purported interest in Steven Defour resurfaced earlier this week, the Daily Mail claims Sir Alex Ferguson is now ready to bid £13million for the Belgian playmaker, in order to head off a bid from Liverpool. The player's agent, Paul Stefani, says: "He (Sir Alex) is still interested but we have to wait for an offer to be accepted by Standard Liege."

09:32 As expected, Newcastle manager Chris Hughton is at the front of the queue for Tom Cleverley, according to Apparently, the newly-promoted Toon are ultra-confident of securing a season-long deal for the gifted midfielder as soon as the Reds return from the pre-season tour.
