Mexican actor - and Javier Hernandez follower - Demian Bichir made a first ever visit to Old Trafford for the Reds’ clash with West Ham last month. Demian, who's appeared in TV series Weeds, watched Sir Alex’s men canter to a 3-0 victory, but it was his meeting after the match with United striker and countryman Chicharito which really made his day…
What were your first impressions of Old Trafford?
The first thing I thought when I walked in was ‘now I know why they call it the Theatre of Dreams.’ I’d only ever seen it on photos and on TV, but to actually be here and see it with my own eyes was really overwhelming. Chivas are my team – I have followed them for as long as I can remember and the people at the club are good friends of mine. But after my visit to Old Trafford, I can now officially declare myself as a Manchester United fan as well!
As a big fan of Chicharito, how proud are you to see the striker plying his trade at the biggest club in the world?
It’s just fantastic. One of his big ambitions was to play for Manchester United and it’s amazing to see him here today – he is living his dream. I think he is at the perfect club. It’s very similar to Chivas in the way the club aims to get the best out of players and that is great for Chicharito because he has the talent and mentality to succeed here.
You’ve obviously followed his career very closely…
Yes, I’ve known him for a long time and it was fantastic to meet up with him and his parents at Old Trafford. I was at his last game for Chivas [during United’s pre-season tour in July] and for him to score one last goal was a great way for him to say goodbye. The fans at Chivas have seen him grow from a boy into a man and also a top player.
He seems a very likeable character as well…
He has this great way about him in that he’s very down to earth and that’s something people love. You don’t only want a hero, you want a hero who is a nice guy and someone you can identify with and that is Chicharito.
Can you see him becoming a United great?
Why not?! I think he combines two key factors. Not only is he a great footballer, he has a great personality and wonderful charisma and is very level-headed. He doesn’t believe he’s this big player –
