Scouting: Mats Hummels

Talking Reds talent spotter Shantanu Ambekar took time to study the performance of Germany and Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels...

Player name: Mats Hummels
National team: Germany
Club team: Borussia Dortmund
Position: Centre-back
Age: 23
Match scouted: Germany 1-0 Portugal (9th June 2012)
Key moment: Cleared away Nani's cross from the right with a diving header in his own box, when Portugal had started to threaten after going behind.
Strengths: He is rock solid in the defence. He is very good in the air in both the boxes. His composure on and off the ball is very sound and he gives 100 per cent in every game. Clearly a no-nonsense defender who has been very consistent for Dortmund and Germany for the past two years.
Weaknesses: Couldn't see any, but maybe he could increase his range of passing, as his passes were just to players beside or near him.
Suitability: With the injury problems we have had in the centre of defence over past couple of seasons, we could use another defender. Hummels could also be a long-term and reliable replacement for Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, as both are in their 30s.
Estimated cost: Has been Dortmund's star performer last season and so he won't come cheaply. He is rated at over £20m by the Bundesliga champions, but if we have get him, we will need to pay at least around £25-£30m. (Note: Hummels signed a new contract with Dortmund on the eve of the tournament).
