Such is the frequency of United’s acts of escapology, it’s easy to get blasé about them. But it’s worth remembering that, first and foremost, it’s got nothing to do with luck.
Comebacks and a fierce determination to keep going until the very end have become part of Manchester United's DNA under Sir Alex Ferguson. Certainly, I doubt there was a single Aston Villa fan who thought the game was won when they went 2-0 up in the second half.
After all, Villa have had their fingers burnt several times in the past. There was the classic comeback in the FA Cup in January 2002 at Villa Park when United were trailing 2-0 before van Nistelrooy and Solskjaer turned things around.
In 2009, Villa led at Old Trafford in the closing minutes before Ronaldo and, most famously, Kiko Macheda produced an astonishing finish. And Macheda again was involved against Villa two years ago when they once more led 2-0 at Villa Park only to see United fight back for a draw.
I imagine the whole of the football world knew what was coming on Saturday as soon as Chicharito scored the goal that got United back into the game. There was a sense of inevitability about it and the whole mood at Villa Park changed in an instant: we just knew what was about to unfold!
As invigorating as these comebacks are, United surely can’t keep doing this. Fifteen points have been garnered from losing positions so far this season. Imagine if you took 15 points off our total: we’d only have as many points as Liverpool!
We’ve now conceded the first goal 10 times in all competitions this season and yet we've managed to go on and win in eight of those games. Saturday's scoreline has also become something of our speciality, with six games involving United ending 3-2 (the Reds have won five of those). At the moment you need nerves of steel to watch United. But my goodness, what an exhilarating ride we're on.
A few weeks ago I used this blog to heap praise on Chicharito so I’m delighted he’s now back to his best. I really hope the Dubious Goals Committee decide he did score his maiden
