Today at Old Trafford

lunch in Gusto restaurant and a brief visit to Alderley United's home ground. (GT)

15:04 Just had a nice chat with Rafael, who was delighted to learn that he had been named's player of the month for September. He was shocked to learn that he was only the third defender in five years to win the award, and admitted he was "very pleased and honoured" to have been selected by the fans. (SB)

14:48 England coach Roy Hodgson has apologised to Rio Ferdinand after a newspaper report claimed he told passengers on the London Underground that the defender would not play for his country again. "I will apologise to him because there's no way I would ever indicate I wasn't going to use a player in that way," Hodgson told a press conference. "But the thing is, I didn't choose him in the squad this time and it's for the same reasons as before. We have other players but certainly I'm not suggesting it's the end of the line." (AM)

14:25 We'll shortly be heading into the MUTV studio to record our latest Red Voices podcast. On the agenda this week: the Spurs defeat, the Cluj win, the trip to Newcastle and our Goal of the Month competition. Look out for it on the site later. (JT)

13:28 There's no football at Old Trafford this weekend but the Super League Grand Final returns to the Reds' home on Saturday. For the first time since I've worked here, my team St Helens aren't in the showpiece event, which will be contested by Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves. Preparations are being made to the stadium, including repainting lines on the pitch, erecting rugby goalposts and hanging promotional banners on the East Stand. Good luck to the several United fans on both teams. (JT)
