Trivia: Double-headers

United will face Chelsea in the Capital One Cup fourth round in the week commencing 29 October, just two or three days after the rivals meet in the Barclays Premier League at Stamford Bridge.

This fixture double-header against Roberto Di Matteo’s men got us thinking about the other times when the Reds played consecutive matches against the same opposition in different competitions throughout Sir Alex Ferguson’s managerial reign at Old Trafford.

Our extensive research has discovered nine previous occasions when this quirk of the fixture list has occurred since the boss took over on 6 November 1986. Here are the answers:

1: 1993/94 v Oldham in Premier League and FA Cup.
2: 1994/95 v Newcastle in League Cup and Premier League.
3: 1996/97 v Leicester in League Cup and Premier League.
4: 1996/97 v Spurs in FA Cup and Premier League.
5: 1996/97 v Wimbledon in FA Cup and Premier League.
6: 2003/04 v Fulham in Premier League and FA Cup.
7: 2003/04 v Arsenal in Premier League and FA Cup.
8: 2005/06 v Wigan in League Cup and Premier League.
9: 2006/07 v Aston Villa in FA Cup and Premier League.
