Answers: Lost the opener

United kicked off the Barclays Premier League campaign with a 1-0 defeat at Everton and yet still went on to win the title with four games to spare.

The Reds may have been beaten at Goodison Park but recovered in magnificent fashion to rack up a record 25 wins from the opening 30 matches.

Our trivia question this week was:

How many times have United lost the opening game of the league season but gone on to lift the title?

The answer is this is only the third time that the Reds have achieved the feat. The previous occasions were in 1992/93 and 1995/96.

Lost the opener

The Reds' first-ever game in the new Premier League ended in a 2-1 defeat at Sheffield United. Brian Deane scored the opening goal of the competition and converted a penalty to double the lead before Mark Hughes bagged a consolation. Of course, United only mustered one point from the first three fixtures after a 3-0 home reverse to Everton and a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford with Ipswich.

"You'll never win anything with kids," reasoned BBC pundit Alan Hansen after a youthful Reds line-up were well beaten 3-1 at Aston Villa in the season opener. David Beckham pulled one back from long range to give a glimmer of promise and the campaign ended in glory with the Double.
