Vote: Player of Month

United played seven matches in January and made an unbeaten start to 2013, winning five times in all competitions.

As well as leading the Barclays Premier League by seven points, Sir Alex's side are also safely through to the fifth round of the FA Cup.

It means there were a number of candidates for the ManUtd.com Player of the Month award and it was difficult to even leave some players off the five-man shortlist.

However, we feel these stars are most deserving of recognition for their efforts, starting with Robin van Persie. United's super striker scored five goals last month, including important strikes against Liverpool and Tottenham, and showed real authority and quality at Wigan. The ex-Arsenal attacker is not only the Reds' leading goalscorer but his set-pieces continue to cause havoc in opposing defences.

Danny Welbeck was nominated for our Man of the Match award four times in January, more than anybody else, and was particularly impressive in the success against Liverpool. Although he did not manage to find the net, his selfless work for the team and ability to make things happen from a wide position have caught the eye.

One man impossible to leave out was Ryan Giggs, who was clearly star performer in the two FA Cup wins against West Ham and Fulham. On each of his three starts, the other was at Wigan, he made the shortlist for the Man of the Match award and his solitary substitute appearance, at West Ham, saw him set up van Persie's dramatic equaliser with one of the passes of the season.

Phil Jones performed splendidly at the heart of defence, his preferred position, in the FA Cup victories and his sterling work in midfield at Tottenham tipped the balance in his favour to be included for our monthly prize.

Again proving his versatility, he started at right-back against Southampton before switching to a midfield role when Rafael came off the bench.
