Fans tale: Flying the flag

United fans Steve and Peter Watts recently took their love of United to new heights by showing off their club colours on Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain.

The brothers, who both grew up in Manchester, have always dreamt of visiting the Himalayas and realised their ambition after years of planning. Having flown the red flag at base camp, Steve spoke to United Review about the whole experience.

“What an incredible journey of a lifetime that has been shared with our kid,” the 61-year-old explained. “The boyhood dream became a reality when we both made it to Everest Base Camp before summiting Kala Patar – the neighbouring mountain - at 18,500ft.

“We both huddled in a hug of emotion as we struggled to breath, tears freely flowed as we took in this amazing panorama. We then started our final ascent of Kala Patar at 4am to witness a most magnificent sunrise over Everest.

“This journey would not have been possible without our Sherpa guides and our thoughts go to those who lost their lives in the avalanche that hit while we were on the mountain.”

Steve and Peter have produced a short video of their trek, which can be viewed here.
