Edwin van der Sar
Left exposed for Villa’s goals but made a number of fine saves. Commanding in the air.

John O’Shea
Found life tricky against Gabriel Agbonlahor but made some excellent tackles and was solid in the air after his move into the middle.

Gary Neville
Began in the centre but big John Carew proved a handful. Improved a lot and tackled well out on the right.

Jonny Evans
Dealt well with a barrage of high balls into Carew and made some timely interceptions.

Patrice Evra
Fought an intriguing battle with James Milner on the touchline and got forward at every opportunity. Produced some dangerous crosses.

Cristiano Ronaldo
Scored two crackers but drifted in and out of the match. Had to deal with constant attention from Villa defenders.

Michael Carrick
Didn’t assert himself on the game as we know he can, but passed well and made some vital contributions in defence.

Darren Fletcher
A wonderful performance from the Scot. Fletch ran himself ragged, tackled superbly and always looked to drive forward when he had the ball.
