Preview: Southampton

Mary's have started the current campaign in impressive fashion. Currently in the Champions League places, Pochettino's plan to take Southampton into Europe seems well on course.

Star man: In what could turn out to be one of the best signings of the summer, £8.5 million centre-half Dejan Lovren has slotted seamlessly into the Southampton back four since his arrival from Lyon. The Croatian international has proved a shrewd acquisition, with his marshaling of the back four helping the Saints concede just two goals so far this season.

Quote/unquote: David Moyes says the Reds go into the match confident: "Sometimes you get the international break on the back of a bad result and sometimes off a good result. We went into it with a good result. [The international break is always a concern], especially when you have so many players away like we do. I'll monitor training, one or two are nursing knocks so we'll need to look at it but hopefully they will be okay."

Referee: Saturday's clash will be the first time Mike Jones has officiated a United game during the present campaign. Indeed, the Chester-born ref only oversaw one Old Trafford game in the entirety of last season: the 1-0 win over West Ham last November.

Sub-plot: The Reds are looking to secure a ninth consecutive victory over Southampton when the teams take to the field on Saturday.

Did you know? The last time Southampton took three points from Old Trafford was way back in 1988. In fact, the Reds have not lost to the Saints, home or away, since 2003.

Rivals watch: Liverpool will kick off the weekend's fixtures away to Newcastle at 12:45 on Saturday, before Arsenal and Chelsea join United in the cluster of 15:00 kick-offs
