Southampton match blog

60' Rooney has the ball in the net after being played through on goal by van Persie, but the Reds' no.10 is marginally offside. Another good call by the linesmen.

57' Huge appeal from the home support as Nani is apparently brought down while running through on goal by Luke Shaw. Seconds later, Wanyama is shown a yellow card after being foxed by Januzaj. Meanwhile, Lambert is on for Rodriguez.

56' Januzaj goes into Jones' notebook, a bit harshly in my opinion, after chasing back to try to win the ball from Nathaniel Clyne. I thought he won it fairly.

54' Fellaini gets a nasty-looking boot full of studs down his shin but, even though referee Jones blows for a free-kick, he takes no further action. That didn't look like a good tackle to me.

52' Our defence has been noticeably more aggressive and combative than in some other games this season. Saints have still caused us problems but we're getting stuck in, which all fans like to see.

51' United have a corner after a neat build-up culminates in Marouane Fellaini's shot being blocked. Van Persie swings it over but it's headed clear.

49' A lovely move by Saints ends up with Jones getting to a cross a nano-second before Lallana inside the six-yard box and the ball goes behind for a corner.

46' We're underway in the second half. Let's hope the Reds can get another goal to calm any nerves.

HT: United 1-0 Southampton. The champions have the upper hand in an entertaining, high-tempo game but Southampton have threatened and will feel they're still in it.

45+1' But the free-kick harmlessly hits the wall and the referee blows for half-time.
