Anfield as it happened

77' Nani has the first real shot on target for United but Mignolet beats the swerving effort away. Andre Wisdom is on for Johnson and there's another frustrating pause in play.

76' Evra takes a heavy knock but has to continue with all subs used. There's a slightly inexplicable drinks break taking place on this dull day on Merseyside.

73' Chicharito has a fine goalscoring record against Liverpool and Everton and how the Reds could do with another rescue act from the Mexican here. He's on with 17 minutes left for his first outing under the new manager.

72' Vidic holds his head in his hand after an under-hit backpass nearly lets in the rampaging Johnson but De Gea is out quickly enough to clear. Chicharito will be United's third and final substitute.

70' Valencia is caught in the face and needs treatment. It's taking a while to sort out which is costing the visitors precious time.

68' The corner count is 7-1 to United and least there's an attempt on goal from this one but Giggs' glancing header is easily held by Mignolet.

68' The champions are really struggling to get van Persie involved but Nani has had a few touches in promising positions. There just needs to be an increase in impetus really.

65' United are in the ascendancy but still very precious is happening around Mignolet's box. That said, Liverpool are being pushed back to an extent and do not look a threat themselves.

63' Nani replaces Young in a like-for-like change on the left wing.

59' Referee Mariner then produces a yellow card for Young for an innocuous tug-back. The Liverpool fans are growing agitated as United enjoy much of the possession. Raheem Sterling is on for Aspas on the hour-mark.
