Anfield as it happened

43' As half time approaches, we've been handed the attendance which is 44,411.

41' Agger dives to head away a Young cross and Carrick is cautioned for a tug as Aspas tries to break. More frustration.

39' Van Persie turns Agger but then slips and shows his frustration with a heavy challenge on the Dane as he clears the ball. Yellow card for the free-scoring Dutchman.

37' Indeed, Valencia replaces Jones, who is unable to shake off that knock he suffered moments ago. The Ecuador winger is used to playing right-back so hopefully he'll be more than up to the task.

36' Antonio Valencia looks like he's coming on as Coutinho sweeps the free-kick over the bar.

35' Iago Aspas also goes into the book for complaining to the referee.

33' Nani starts warming up in front of the away supporters. It's reassuring to have him available again to come off the bench. Meanwhile, Cleverley is booked for a foul on Coutinho, who hurt Jones seconds earlier with a challenge that went unpunished.

32' The Reds are enjoying a spell of possession but without causing any consternation to the Merseysiders' defence. Something of a low-key period in the game at present.

27' Gerrard's free-kick from a central position is comfortably held by De Gea, who dives to his right to save.

25' Van Persie seems to have drifted to the right wing with Giggs and Welbeck going down the middle in a change of formation. It's only temporary though as the Dutchman now joins Welbeck further forward but it looks like the Reds are now operating with more of a 4-4-2 system.

23' The referee Andre Marriner gets in the way of an intended pass out wide by Carrick. It's been that sort of first quarter for United.
