Preview: United vs Valencia

Get yourself ready for our final pre-season fixture as Valencia visit Old Trafford for REUNITED '14…

The Opposition Following five consecutive victories during the summer tour of America, United will be aiming to make it a clean sweep of wins by defeating the Spaniards in Louis van Gaal's first home match as manager.

Previous Meetings The Reds have edged previous meetings between the two sides, with two wins, five draws and one defeat from eight competitive encounters. In 2009, United won 2-0 in a friendly at Old Trafford against a Valencia side containing Juan Mata, while the most recent clash was a 1-1 draw in the Champions League in December 2010.

Manager Nuno Santo replaced Juan Antonio Pizzi at the beginning of July, having led Portuguese minnows Rio Ave to a historic first-ever European qualification last term. He masterminded runs to the finals of both major domestic cup finals, earning a spot in the Europa League in the process.

Star Man Valencia's line-up is perhaps not quite as familiar as in recent years, with big names such as Mata, Jordi Alba and Roberto Soldado departing in the past few seasons. However, young home-grown striker Paco Alcacer showed great promise last season, scoring the winner in a 3-2 triumph at Barcelona and netting a hat-trick to help defeat Basel 5-0 and overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit in the Europa League.

Last Season A disappointing eighth-place finish resulted in no European football for the first time since 1997/98 and cost Pizzi his job. Santo has already begun to rebuild with five new signings and will hope for better things in the coming months.
