Vote for September's star

September may have ended on a disappointing note for Manchester United - with Saturday's home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur - but it was still a largely successful month with the Reds registering five wins in six matches.

We've looked back through those half-dozen displays and selected four players for inclusion in's Player of the Month poll.

Paul Scholes pulled the strings at Southampton to orchestrate a sensational comeback before scoring against Wigan on his 700th United appearance. He also played a vital role in United's improved second-half showing against Tottenham to prove, once again, that he's still one of the most talented midfielders in the country.

Michael Carrick netted a rare goal against Galatasaray to win a match in which his passing really shone. He also took part in every minute of league action during September and, although not always eye-catching, anchored United's midfield expertly. No other player has picked up as many Man of the Match nominations on this season.

Rio Ferdinand was outstanding at Anfield in the Reds' 2-1 win, even dominating after he picked up a dead leg in the first period. He also marshalled United's back four in wins against Southampton and Wigan.

Rafael started in five of the Reds' six September fixtures and it was his consistency that really impressed. Of course, his wonder goal at Liverpool also caught the eye, but just as pleasing is the maturity and decision-making the Brazilian has shown since the start of the season.
