Zaha bows out in Israel

Wilfried Zaha experienced disappointment on Tuesday as England were beaten 1-0 by hosts Israel in the European Under-21 Championship - a third consecutive defeat for the Three Lions.

Stuart Pearce's side were seeking a morale-boosting win having already exited the competition after losing to Italy and Norway, but ultimately finished bottom of the group due to Ofir Kriaf’s solitary goal at the Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem.

Zaha, who will now look forward to joining his new Manchester United team-mates on 1 July, made a slow start to proceedings but was later prominent in most of England’s attacking play, playing a key role in an outstanding chance for Danny Rose on 30 minutes.

The current Championship Player of the Year also created a chance for Tom Ince, son of ex-Red Paul, before forcing a decent save from Israeli goalkeeper Boris Kleyman, capping a frustrating evening.

Afterwards, manager Pearce refused to take blame for the defeat, saying: "I honestly don't believe I should be here answering questions on behalf of the players. They should be here answering questions on why their performances were so poor, to be honest with you.”
