It’s nearly a decade since United’s first team last faced Real Madrid, but one Reds side has graced the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu much more recently.
Last June, a United legends XI lost 3-2 to their Real Madrid counterparts in a charity game which pitted famous names from the pasts of both clubs against one another. United’s side featured a clutch of players from the 1999 Treble-winning squad.
Fernando Morientes gave the hosts an early lead but Lee Sharpe brought the Reds on level terms, only for Luis Figo to power Real back ahead almost immediately. After Teddy Sheringham's penalty miss, Fernando Redondo prodded home to put Real 3-1 up. Sheringham atoned for his miss with 10 minutes left, reaching Andy Cole's through-ball and clipping over Pedro Contreras, but Real held on to edge an enjoyable spectacle.
The two teams of legends will meet again at Old Trafford on 2 June 2013 – see ManUtd.com's Ticket & Hospitality News for more information. And if you can't get to the game, then be sure to watch MUTV for extended match highlights.
