In this second episode former United defender Jimmy Nicholl goes back under the spotlight.
In the early 1970’s Nicholl was discovered by a legendary United scout as a teenager playing football in Northern Ireland; and there was an element of luck in him being spotted so early: “Bob Bishop was there, he was looking at someone else and I shouldn’t even have been playing, but somebody got injured and I took their place.”
Nicholl’s skilful defending and obvious potential didn’t escape the wily United scout: “At half-time Bishop said ‘have you signed for anybody?’ I said no and that was it.”
By the age of 26, Nicholl had played over 200 games for United and seemed a safe bet to keep his place in the team for years to come.
However, the Ron Atkinson era brought an end to his Old Trafford days and Jimmy went on to forge a successful career elsewhere; in England, Scotland and Toronto.
