The new manager had left a successful Aberdeen side for a sleeping giant, a Reds team stuck in the bottom four places of England’s top division. He made it his mission to "knock Liverpool off their perch" and deliver United’s first league title since 1967. But firstly, he had to take on Oxford United at the Manor Ground in a far-from-easy fixture.
Having won the League Cup the previous season and with some good, young players in their squad like John Aldridge and Ray Houghton, Oxford had started the season well. In November 1986, they reached their highest-ever league position – a feat that still stands today - and their form was to prove too good with the Reds losing 2-0.
MUTV has tracked down the United players on duty that day to tell their story and to find out what made the man who became the most successful British manager of all time different from all the rest. So don’t miss Fergie's First XI at 18:30 GMT on Saturday 2 November or 21:00 GMT on Sunday 3 November, with further chances to see it in the following week.
