Scholes' early years

Only Ryan Giggs and Sir Bobby Charlton have turned out more times for Manchester United than Paul Scholes.

A veritable Reds legend and admired throughout the football world, Scholes learnt his trade on the streets of North Manchester, just 10 miles from Old Trafford.

"For as long as I can remember, all I wanted to do was play football," he told ManUtd.com. "As soon as I got home from school I'd throw my bag down and go out and play football wherever I could. Wherever we could kick a ball that's where we went."

In the first of our exclusive three-part Made Of Manchester interview with Scholes, the 37-year-old casts his mind back to his formative years, reveals the childhood dream that played in his head during schoolyard kickabouts and talks about what Manchester United meant to him as a teenager.
