This month in 1998/99

December was hardly proving fruitful for United in the league, and there was little pre-Christmas cheer when the Reds went 3-0 down at home to Middlesbrough after the hour. United kicked into gear when Nicky Butt headed home a David Beckham cross and Paul Scholes slid in for United’s second, but Boro clung to their lead to cap a miserable day for the Reds.

Boxing Day saw United finally notch a first win of the month, along with a first clean sheet - beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 at Old Trafford. Another clean sheet was kept at Chelsea three days later - Schmeichel was fantastic between the posts, producing several outstanding saves to deny Zola and co.

UEFA Champions League

United progressed to the quarter-finals after drawing 1-1 with Bayern Munich. The Reds went through as one of the two best group runners-up and the competition's top scorers. Roy Keane powered United in front with a right-foot shot from outside the box, only for Hasan Salihamidzic to scuff in the equaliser from a corner. A young Wes Brown didn't look out of place, despite being the only uncapped player to start the match for either side.
