This Month in 1998/99

The Treble wasn't built in a day... almost a year of hard work went into United's epic achievement of a decade ago. We celebrate this in a series of monthly features, starting with September 1998 when a Spanish league club provided the opposition in the Reds' opening Champions League group game. Good omen anyone?

UEFA Champions League

The reward for beating Polish champions LKS Lodz in August's two-legged qualifier was a mouthwatering group featuring Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Both were in the September schedule while the whipping boys of Brondby would wait until October.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Dwight Yorke were paired up front against Barcelona, with Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham among the subs, but it was three midfielders who ultimately did the damage. Ryan Giggs opened the scoring with an old-fashioned centre-forward’s header, Paul Scholes smashed home the rebound from Yorke’s overhead kick and David Beckham restored United’s lead with an exquisite free-kick after Anderson and Giovanni (penalty) pulled Barca level after the break. Hopes of a thrilling 3-2 win were dashed however when Nicky Butt handled a shot and was sent off and Enrique scored a spot-kick.
