Fifty-three minutes into the third round tie with Middlesbrough and United looked set to continue their alarming December form of just one win in eight matches.

Andy Townsend's strike threatened to steal a second Old Trafford win for Boro in two weeks. But after failing to claw back the deficit in a 3-2 league defeat before Christmas, United weren’t going to let lightning strike twice.

Andy Cole lashed a shot home from the left to draw the Reds level, before Denis Irwin converted a penalty with eight minutes to spare after Neil Maddison was adjudged to have fouled Nicky Butt. Sir Alex Ferguson admitted it was the softest of penalties, but Ryan Giggs ensured a 3-1 victory by driving the ball past Mark Schwarzer after a sweet one-two with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Next up was a tough fourth round test with Liverpool. The visitors long held a 1-0 lead courtesy of Michael Owen's header and despite dominating the
