United greats: David Beckham

Continuing our 20-day showcase of suggestions for the Reds' greatest-ever player...

Yet another product of the class of '92, Becks went on to become the world's most famous footballer.

It takes blood, sweat and tears to look like a genius – and few have worked harder. The shy young lad from Leytonstone who became a global brand was pivotal in United’s modern success, his pinpoint deliveries and killer freekicks signature moments of the 1990s and early 2000s. "His talent had to be seen to be believed," opined youth-team coach Eric Harrison in 1995. We saw it – but sometimes still couldn’t believe it.

What they say: "His contribution to football is exceptional. He is an example to youngsters of how to play the game with skill, integrity and determination." – HRH Prince William
