United greats: Schmeichel

From now until 8 January, ManUtd.com is showcasing 20 players nominated by Inside United magazine for the title of United's greatest-ever player. Next up, Peter Schmeichel...

Hailed as United's greatest ever goalkeeper, the 'Great Dane' proved virtually impossible to replace at Old Trafford.

“Peter who?” demanded the English press when the Danish keeper pitched up at Old Trafford in the summer of 1991. They knew eight years, five Premier Leagues, a Champions League, three FA Cups, one League Cup and one Super Cup later. “The buy of the century,” declared the boss. And who are we to argue? Hugely imposing at 6ft 3in, with hands like shovels, he commanded his box as if his life depended on it.

What they say: “At his best, I don't believe a better goalkeeper than Peter Schmeichel has played the game. He is a giant figure in the history of Manchester United and our debt to him will never be forgotten.” – Sir Alex Ferguson
