United were looking to bounce back from a shock 3-1 loss to Fulham when Premier League new boys Portsmouth came to Old Trafford in November 2003. Pompey had a familiar face in their line-up - ex-Red Teddy Sheringham.
Action: Portsmouth troubled the hosts early on, Patrik Berger firing over and Yakubu warming the hands of Tim Howard before United created their first clear chance. Ruud van Nistelrooy, who had already hit the crossbar, found himself one-on-one with Shaka Hislop but blazed wastefully over the crossbar.
Moments later United were ahead, Diego Forlan lashing home Ryan Giggs' clever nod down. Boris Zivkovic headed tamely at Howard before the Reds made the game safe with two goals in four minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo netted his first for the club with a whipped free kick that eluded everyone and found the far corner and then Roy Keane settled matters with a thumping left-foot shot.
Reaction: The Reds finished third behind Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ and Claudio Ranieri’s Chelsea but consoled themselves by lifting the FA Cup in May, seeing off MiIlwall 3-0 in the final at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.
