Flashback: Villa '94

The Reds travelled to Villa Park in fifth place after 12 games, albeit with games in hand over Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle and Blackburn. After a 4-0 humbling at the hands of Barcelona four days earlier at the Nou Camp, United were looking to bounce back in league action and build on wins over the top two sides in their last two matches, including a superb 4-2 win at Ewood Park in the last league away game.



Action: Steve Staunton had already wasted a golden chance to put the hosts ahead when Dalian Atkinson’s deflected drive put Villa in front. Gary Walsh was called upon to save from Staunton before a rocket from Paul Ince hauled the Reds level shortly before half time. Andrei Kanchelskis' low drive put United ahead, his sixth Premier League goal of a productive campaign. The game was far from won and Walsh was again required to make two fine saves from substitute Dwight Yorke as the Reds were left hanging on for an important three points.

Post-match: Four days later Manchester City visited Old Trafford and Andrei Kanchelskis hammered home a hat-trick as the Reds thrashed the Blues 5-0 in an unforgettable night in M16.
