Despite a promising start, United's Carling Cup hopes were left hanging in the balance as Carlos Tevez overturned Ryan Giggs' opener with a brace against his former side.
The Reds' 4-5-1 formation penned City back for long periods, and the midfield's admirable support of lone striker Wayne Rooney yielded dividends when Giggs slotted in from close range to open the scoring.
Much of the pre-match hype had centred around Tevez, and he made a telling intervention just before half time when he converted a controversial penalty. Midway through the second period, Eastlands shook with joy as the Argentine headed the hosts ahead.
