The prize was more than a Carling Cup final place. For the United fans inside a rocking OT, as well as millions watching worldwide, this was about making a statement: that despite City’s new-found wealth, we’re still top dogs in town.
After a goalless first half, the Reds were first out after the break, straining with intent. The leveller on aggregate came seven minutes into the second period when Michael Carrick teed up Paul Scholes for a low finish. The provider later became the goalscorer, steering home a ball from Darren Fletcher.
Hearts were in mouths when Carlos Tevez pulled a goal back for City, to make it 2-1 on the night but 3-3 overall. But while City were spent, United had something left in the tank. A flurry of late corners concluded with Ryan Giggs’ inviting cross and Wayne Rooney powered his header home to send OT into delirium and the Reds to Wembley.
MUTV Online will have live audio on the cup final and video highlights from 17:00 Monday.
