Forever on his toes, always looking for – and often finding – the killer pass or strike, Paul Scholes was a major force in 17 mostly silver-laden seasons.
In his 676 appearances, Scholes brought great vision and creativity to the team, not to mention a famed ability to belt in goals from outside the box or inside it after making one of his trademark late runs from midfield. His 2008 Champions League semi-final clincher against Barcelona was arguably the best of his 150 goals but there are other candidates; Valley Parade, Villa Park, the pick of his hat-trick at St James' Park... it's quite a catalogue.
As well as winning a remarkable collection of honours including 10 league titles, Scholes also won many admirers in the game. Zinedine Zidane, three-time World Player of the Year, once said, "Scholes is almost untouchable. I never tire of watching him play. You rarely come across the complete footballer, but Scholes is as close to it as you can get."
