UEFA Champions League
Tuesday 26 November 2002 | St Jakob Stadium
FC BASEL 1
MANCHESTER UNITED 3
(Van Nistelrooy 2, Solskjaer)
FC Basel: Zuberbuehler; Haas, Zwyssig, M Yakin, Atouba; Ergic, Cantaluppi, Chipperfield (Tum 72), H Yakin; Giminez, Rossi (Duruz 75).
United: Barthez; P Neville, O'Shea, Brown (May 93), Silvestre; Solksjaer (Chadwick 90), Veron, Fortune, Giggs; Scholes, Van Nistelrooy (Forlan 72).
On this day in 2002, United faced FC Basel for the first ever time and recorded an invaluable come-from-behind win at the St Jakob Stadium in Switzerland.
Competing in the old UEFA Champions League Phase 2 format, the Reds fell behind as early as the first minute when Christian Giménez hammered past the helpless Fabien Barthez.
Sir Alex’s men hit back after the break, however, with Ruud van Nistelrooy scoring twice in as many minutes before a 3-1 victory was guaranteed by Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s low finish on 68 minutes.
The result could provide inspirational for the present day Reds, who need to avoid defeat against Basel on December 7 in order to reach the Champions League knockout stages.
