Gallery: Green giants

Many great goalkeepers have played for Manchester United and almost all of them have predominantly worn green during their Old Trafford careers.

Indeed, until the 1970s, it was very rare for a stopper to turn out in anything but the traditional goalkeeper's colour. Since then, however, we've seen United custodians wear all manner of kits, including blue, white, silver, grey, black, blue and purple (not to mention one or two swirling, psychedelic numbers that mixed a few colours together!).

Green has, however, largely endured, although there were periods between 2001 and 2005 and 2009 and 2011 when no United goalkeeper wore the colour. This season, after a two-year absence, it's returned to the fold and the new kit is now available to purchase in the United megastore.

To celebrate that fact, we've compiled an extensive gallery featuring Reds goalkeepers wearing green. It dates all the way back to 1966 (the first colour photo we could access) and boasts 33 images. Enjoy!
