Michael Owen's first goal for United could not have been better timed.
The summer signing collected a Ryan Giggs pass and placed a perfect finish wide of Shay Given after Craig Bellamy looked to have pinched a point for City with his second goal of the game.
Wayne Rooney's early opener was cancelled out when Carlos Tevez pounced a mistake by Ben Foster to tee up Gareth Barry for the equaliser. Darren Fletcher nodded United back in front, only for Bellamy to drill a fine effort past Foster to make it 2-2.
Another header from Fletcher looked to be enough to clinch the points, only for Martin Petrov to rob Rio Ferdinand and play in Bellamy for a 90th-minute leveller. Lesser teams would have been deflated but the Reds regrouped and Owen struck in the sixth minute of injury time to leave City chief Mark Hughes fuming as the home fans rejoiced.
