Inside United spoke to several United fans competing at the London 2012 Olympics. Burnley-born Steven Burke was part of the GB men's team pursuit track cycling team who smashed the world record in winning gold on Friday…
Talk us through your training…
For the team pursuit it varies from one to six hours per session depending on which aspect we’re working on. We train six to seven days a week, with a lot of split days [training morning and afternoon]. The intensity ranges from short sprints of 125m to long, six-hour rides on the road. We normally have one easy day per week for total rest, or a short one-hour ride on the road.
How long have you been a Red?
I’ve been a United fan all of my life. A lot of my family are United fans… my dad’s favourite player of all time is George Best. My parents bought me United shirts every year growing up.
Who were your early United heroes – and why?
Eric Cantona and Ryan Giggs. Cantona for his personality and goalscoring ability. Giggs for his ability to tear defences apart. The young Giggs was awesome.
How do you follow United these days? Can you get to many of the games?
I was an Official Member last season and watched 10 home games, and I will be a Member again next season. If I can’t make it to OT, I watch every game on TV if it fits into my training schedule.
