The Reds were confident of victory. And why not? City hadn’t beaten them since 1989 or even scored a goal in a league derby for 450 minutes. As inevitable as night following day, Cantona got the Reds off the mark after just seven minutes. City rallied and levelled through new signing Mikhail Kavelashvili, but Cantona helped United restore the lead when his pass – part of a neat one-two – set up Andy Cole. City again equalised, but Cantona wasn’t finished. After receiving the ball in the centre of the park, the French forward broke clear of his men with rangy strides and fed the ball to Ryan Giggs on his left. The Welshman danced into the City box before lashing the ball into the top of the net.
