ManUtd.com caught up with former United chairman Martin Edwards to assess the signing of Eric Cantona...
The pair of them, for me, are probably the greatest. If you look at the others and think of Roy Keane, Denis Irwin – with what we paid for him – there have been a lot of excellent signings.
There’s also Ruud van Nistelrooy and, when you think about it, there really have been some great transfers in Sir Alex Ferguson's time but I think Eric was the catalyst to win the league and end that long spell without a title.
Of course, we were chasing a striker and he came in and won the league in his very first season. We then won it in four of the five years he was here before his retirement.
If he hadn’t have had that trouble at Crystal Palace, and subsequent lengthy ban, we’d have won it five out of five. He won the title at Leeds United too in the season before he came here and that shows you how great he was.
I think it says a lot about Alex that Cantona, van Nistelrooy, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Schmeichel – all great players – came back to pay their respects to Alex for the unveiling of the statue in front of the Sir Alex Ferguson stand. That tells you what they think of him.
