Only 3,000 fans turned out at North Road for this first meeting with the Rams in our debut league campaign. The Heathens struck seven times, courtesy of hat-tricks from Bob Donaldson and Alf Farman, plus the odd goal from Tom Fitzsimmons, and the scoreline would have been better had the referee not chalked off four goals for Heath.

John Barnes put the Merseysiders ahead, only for Brian McClair to power in a spectacular volley within a minute. Mark Hughes then powered United ahead, and the victory was quickly assured by a back-post finish from livewire winger Russell Beardsmore. "This young United side confirmed their superiority over the champions and gave Old Trafford a New Year's Day to savour for a long time,” reported the Independent’s Derek Hodgson.
