Manchester United 5 Sunderland 0 | Premier League | Saturday 21 December 1996

Sunderland provided the opposition in United's last home game before Christmas on this day (21 December) in 1996.

That game will forever be remembered for one of Eric Cantona's most celebrated goals, but it's easy to forget the Reds scored four more times in what was the side's biggest win of the season.

The visitors were arguably the better side for an hour but, as Black Cats boss Peter Reid later pointed out, goals change games. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer headed the Double-winners' opener 10 minutes before the break and, three minutes after it, slotted home after racing clear. In between, Cantona converted a penalty with his usual aplomb.

Nicky Butt added a fourth before Cantona, in his final season, took centre-stage with a sumptuous turn, deft chip and iconic celebration to send the Old Trafford faithful home with plenty of festive cheer.

That lifted United to fourth in the table and, though a bid for Champions League glory ended in the semi-finals, domestically it proved to be another season to be jolly as Sir Alex’s men retained the title by seven points ahead of Newcastle.
